"Pointless, but we want it anyway"

virtual worlds still empty

Despite the fact you probably heard mind boggling stories about virtual worlds we could say that the real world is still not ready for it. A good example of this is the article in the Guardian last year that reported the ambitious co-venture between the chinese government and MIND ARK Gotenburg, the company behind the the virtual world Entropia Universe. The plan was to construct a virtual world that would play host to billions of avators (a virtual character). China wanted to repeat what they had done in manufacturing, only this time in services, potentitally creating a one-stop shop that connects consumers directly with chinese suppliers and offering a base for international companies. Despite the fact this all sounds really thrilling, and as a concept combines social shopping, virtual existences, online retail and a huge influence on the global economy we haven't heard anything about it. Second life the biggest succes in this field with great initiatives like the ABN bank shop, fashion workshops and architects building model houses for the global market still remains a dwarf with only 50.000 aviators. The interface and the usability is just not appealing/ attractive enough for the mass to really incorperate it in their lives. Besides that; real life isn't that bad.
